Students: Using Blackboard
Logging in
- Start your web browser and go to http://blackboard.dickinson.edu. A
link can also be found off of the Dickinson Student
Home Page.
- Click the Login button to the left. The "Username and Password
Required" box appears.
- Enter your User Name in the designated box. Your user name
will be the same as your Alpha user name.
- Enter your Password in the designed box. If this is the first
time you have ever logged into Blackboard, your password is the same
as your user name. If you have logged in before and changed your
student password enter that password.
NOTE: If you have forgotten your password,
refer to the next section to see how to request a new one.
- Click OK. The "My Blackboard - Home" page appears.
NOTE: You only have one user name
and password for the entire Blackboard system. Even if you have several
classes where your professor is using Blackboard, you can access all of your
classes
with the same username and password.
Have
you forgotten your password?
- On the web, go to: http://blackboard.dickinson.edu
- Click the Login button.
- Under the "Username" and "Password" boxes, click the link, "Forgot your
password?"
- Fill out the information on the next screen. Follow the directions
and then Submit the form.
- Check your Dickinson email account. The Blackboard server
will send you an automated email message providing the link you need to
visit
to select a new password. Just follow the directions and you will have
your new password in a matter of minutes.
Getting familiar with the
Blackboard portal
The Blackboard portal provides access to your online course materials. The
My
Dickinson tab provides
access to your courses, any timely course announcements, a calendar and task
list.
You also have the ability to enter your
own calendar events, to-do tasks, check your Blackboard online grades (if your
professor uses the online gradebook), and edit your personal information
(to change your password), along with other things. These are found in the Tools
section.
Accessing a course
In the
My Courses area on the
My Dickinson tab, you will see your
online courses listed. Simply click the link for the course in which you
want to work. At any time you may return to the
My Dickinson tab
by clicking the tab. It remains visible at all times.
The main course window
The main course window appears when you first enter a course. Simply
click any of the main buttons on the left side to access various course
documents and resources. Refer to the online Student Manual for further
information. This manual is located in the Student Tools section
of the course window.
Student Tools
Once you have entered a course, just click the Student Tools button
on the left. The Student Tools will be unique to each course.
Instructors can select various options they want available to students. If
you have mutiple courses in Blackboard the buttons and contents within the
buttons may
vary. To return to the course content, click any of the course buttons on
the
left.
Inside the Student Tools is an icon for Student Manual which
describes all the features of Blackboard.You may browse the manual
online by clicking the Contents links to the left.
Also, inside the Student Tools is the Digital Drop Box. This
is where students can add files to Blackboard or send files to the instructor.
There are two button options: Add File or Send File. If you select Add
File it will be added to your files in Blackboard until you
are ready to send your final copy. It can be removed at any time using the
remove
button.If you send the file it will also be sent and also added to your files.It
will give you the submit date so you know when it was sent. It cannot be
removed
or unsent.
Student Tools also features a Calendar, Address book, and Tasks.
You can set each for your own use and view by using the
My Dickinson tab.
Changing your Blackboard
password
On the My Dickinson tab, in the Tools box, click on Personal
Information. Click the link to Change Password. Enter
your new password in both boxes and click Submit.
If you've forgotten your password, refer to the previous
section for instructions on requesting a new one.
Setting your privacy options
All users can indicate whether or not they appear on the Blackboard online directory.
By default, you
will not appear until you change this option.
To allow your name to be viewed in the online user directory:
- From the main My Dickinson area, under the Tools section,
click Personal Information.
- Click Set Privacy Options.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to indicate what information you
wish to make public to the Dickinson Blackboard community.
Self - Enrollment
A course would first be made into a self-enrolling course by an instructor. If your professor tell you to enroll in to their course follow these steps below:
1. Log into Blackboard.
2. Click on the red Courses tab.
3. Type in "econ or psych" (no quotes) in the Course Search Box on left side of window..
4. You will then see a list of courses. Scroll down till you see the course.
5. Click on the Enroll button to the right of the listed course.
6. Click the Submit button.
7. Click the OK button and you will be enrolled into that course.
IMPORTANT: Logging out
It's very important to log out properly. At the top of the Blackboard portal
window, click the Logout button. This will return you to the Login
screen. It is not necessary to quit your browser session. If you leave
the computer at the Login screen and someone sits down at the computer after you,
the "Back" button on the browser will continue to take them to the Login screen.
