Laptop Computers
LIS has two types of laptops for loan. One set is available for
Faculty use on or off campus. The other set can only be used within
the Waidner-Spahr Library. This second set works with the Library's
wireless Internet access system.
Faculty Laptop Loans (on or off-campus)
Employees of the college may borrow a laptop from the library Circulation
Desk for up to 10 days for college-related work. The employee should
request a laptop by E-mailing
circ@dickinson.edu. The borrower must come to the library Circulation
Desk to sign a waiver accepting responsibility for the laptop. The
employee will be held responsible for damages or loss to the computer
or peripherals loaned with the computer.
All loaner laptops run office XP and have current software.
If the employee intends to use the laptop for a presentation on
campus, he/she should tell the Helpdesk
(lower level of the library) where the presentation is being
held so that the Helpdesk Technician may determine if a data jack
is available at that location. The borrower should allow at least
24-hours notice to prepare the laptop prior to the presentation.
Laptops are made available on a "first come, first
served" basis. Reservations are encouraged.
Waidner-Spahr Library Laptops (students, staff and
faculty)
The library has twenty Apple iBooks and 15 Dell notebooks available
for in-library use for classes or by individuals:
- the laptops may be reserved for class use in the library. Faculty
should reserve library rooms with CASE and the laptops through
the circulation desk by E-mailing
circ@dickinson.edu.
- laptops may be checked out for use in the library to Dickinson
College community members whenever they are not scheduled for
class use.
- The initial check-out period is for two hours with renewals
for another two hour period, if there is not a waiting list. Please
note: Overdue fees start 10 minutes after the time the computer
is due and accrue up to $5.00. In addition to checking-out the
computer in our circulation system, the patron will be required
to sign a responsibility agreement form. Patrons will be responsible
for lost or damaged laptops and/or parts. For lost computers,
the replacement fee is $1500.00 For lost power or internet cables,
the replacement fee is $25. Please do not leave laptops unattended,
even for 5 minutes. Damage will be assessed and fined on a case-by-case
basis according to the billed costs.
- Software and Networking capabilities of the iBooks.
- The iBooks can be used with either wireless or wired networking.
- Each iBook has MacOS 10.2, Microsoft Office v.X (Word X, Powerpoint
X, Excel X, but does not include Access), Netscape 7.1, Internet
Explorer, World Book Encyclopedia, BetterTelnet (for access to
Alpha using Pine), Adobe Acrobat Reader, QuickTime, and various
other shareware and internet access software.
- The iBooks will connect to the lab network. Students may log
onto the residential file server and access their network files
when using the iBooks connected to the network. The faculty file
server is not available from the lab network, thus faculty may
not access their network files. However, they will be able to
save their work to a super disk drive which will be available
to them.
- If special software is needed for a class, please inform Maureen Dermott when making cart reservations.
