Using RSS
Though the content of RSS feeds varies and each reader is somewhat unique, here are some steps that will
enable you to subscribe to the
Dickinson
College library's RSS feeds and most others:
Step 1: Find a free RSS reader and create an account. Two popular examples are Bloglines (http://www.bloglines.com/)
and Google Reader (http://www.google.com/reader/).
Step 2: Return to the Library home page (http://lis.dickinson.edu/Library/)
and click on one of the RSS feeds.
Step 3: At this point, it is easy to see why a
reader is needed to make sense of this page. At the top of the screen,
locate the address or "URL" of this web page (it should begin with "http:// . .
."). Then, either copy it or write it down.
Step 4: Return to the feed reader with which
you now have an account. Click "Add" or "Add Subscription". In the
box that appears, paste or type the address from Step 3.
Step 5: Click the "Add" button (Google Reader)
or the "Subscribe" button (Bloglines).
Step 6: The title of the RSS feed and the number of new items that have been published should appear on the
left. In order to see all of these items, click on the title of the
feed. All of the newly published material should appear in the window on
the right. If you wish to read more about an individual item (for
example, if you want to see the catalog record for one of the items in the "New
Acquisitions" feed), just click on its title.
