Thomas Hubbard Vail Motter collection, c. 1915-1970.
Vail Motter (1901-c. 1970) was a professor and an author. His main interests included theatre and poetry. He attended Mercersburg Academy, where his involvement in an incident resulted in his dismissal, after which he attended Princeton Preparatory (c. 1917-1919). He began to teach at North Western University around 1930, but his contract was not renewed due to salary cutbacks. Motter then took a position at Wellesley College, where he remained until c. 1941; however, during this tenure he did take a year or so of leave, owing to disputes with co-workers. He continued to write and became a patron of libraries, particularly the one at Yale. The majority of the documents in this collection concern correspondence between Motter and others, such as the extensive run of correspondence between him and his father during his days at Princeton.
